In the last two years, KPLC has connected a total of 1,041,576 new customers raising the number of customers from 2,261,064 in March 2013 to the current 3,300,467, representing a growth of 46%. This accelerated customer connection was achieved through implementation of innovative strategies which include StimaLoan and subsidized connections funded by the Government and partners in the Global Partnership on Output Based Assistance (GPOBA) project. KPLC has so far connected a total of 540,000 customers this financial year, the highest ever achieved.

The GPOBA project aims at providing safe, legal and quality power supply to poor customers in the slum areas. The project initially aimed at the major urban slums in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu and other big towns. During implementation, the uptake in these slums – Mathare, Kibra, Mukuru and others was very poor mainly due to the influence of cartels which thrive on stolen electricity. We anticipate that electrification of these communities will result in accelerated economic growth at the micro-economic level in line with the Government’s vision 2030.

The GPOBA project has become hugely successful communities coming out to partner with Kenya Power in seeking out ways of easing the above challenges as they have tasted the fruits or seen and heard of benefits to other connected areas. The current status on GPOBA electrification schemes is as follows-
